On the road again

Over five days we drove more than 2000 miles.

From San Diego to Chicago- a little jaunt into Middle America.

The Hungry One is currently at the gym. Considering what we ate, maybe I should go and join him. Here’s a glimpse at some of the highlights.

BURGERS AT ROCKIN’ BAJA COASTAL CANTINA SAN DIEGO

A meaty cultural clash, perfect for when you’re just back over the border from Baja and you can’t quite face dinner with out a margarita to wash it down.

MALTS AT PENNY’S DINER, NEVADA CITY HIGHWAY

When it’s 114 degrees F outside you need a liquid lunch.

CHERRY PIE FROM TIMBERLINE’S IN BEAVER, UTAH

The colour of children’s panadol, but a taste that is tart summer fun.

POTATO SKINS AT THE ALE HOUSE, GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO

Filled with steak, onions and cheese. This is honest beer drinking food.

BBQ AND BRISKET AT BRECKENRIDGE BBQ, DENVER

Cooked meat with a sticky sauce does not good bbq make, my friends.

RANDOM MARSHMALLOW FLUFF AT WALMART, GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA

Jet propulsion technology put to sensible use.

BURRITO AT TACQUITOS, GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA

A pork burrito the size of a donkey’s head.

CHICKEN DINNER FROM THE CORN CRIB IN SHELBY, IOWA

You can’t not eat corn at the corn crib. It would just be… wrong.

BROWNIE SUNDAE, FROM GRANITE CITY, CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA

I can’t believe he ate the whole thing.

We drove through mountains and across plains. I read a couple too many trashy magazines and now hate myself for being able to identify which Kardashian is which. We listened to some specially made playlists (with some special quirks- Willie Nelson’s ‘On the road again’ somehow got transferred over as the theme from Forrest Gump. Floating feathers wasn’t quite the kick off vibe I was going for.) We also made it through talking versions of Malcolm Gladwell’s ‘Outliers’ and half of President Obama reading ‘Dreams from my father’.

We failed to find drinkable coffee anywhere, bar a little place in Vail.

After five days we got to Chicago in one piece, with appetites well primed to take on dinner at Alinea.

From some of America’s trashiest food to arguably its best, all in a matter of hours. Bring it on.
