Chocolate rum cake with lime and ginger (a dark and stormy layer cake)

When the skies (metaphoric or otherwise) turn a little dark is it cake or a cocktail that you reach for?

Sometimes it’s hard to choose. Introducing; the cocktail cake. This one’s inspired by a dark and stormy.

Quick caveat.

Things are good. Shining good. Stellar good. They’re good for many reasons. For one there’s there’s less grit and graft in life than in the past.

Things are on the up not just due to circumstance. I should admit that since I had my ‘bolt of lightning* I’ve become much better at filtering for the positive.

A great coffee in Milan.

It shouldn’t be hard. It should be a cake walk. The Starbucks creation fable tells us the vibrant Milanese espresso scene was what originally inspired Howard Schultz. Yet not all the coffee that you’ll find in Milan is good. In fact some of it is downright dreckish. Beans that had been harshly roasted and hastily muddled milk slopped into a cup was pretty standard in our time in this most fashionable of cities.

To me where you go and what you do on a date night communicates quite a bit about a couple. It’s also a sly demonstration of power dynamics. Who’s the social secretary in the duo?
