Swiss Chard with Parmesan, Pear and Pine Nuts

Poor Swiss Chard. I bet it feels like the girl who had a lock on the school captaincy, right up until the final year when in blows a willowy creature with a winning smile, tumbling curls and a killer high-jump from overseas.

Ever since The Ascendancy of Kale, who remembers how solid and reliable Swiss Chard was before it? It was there, filling out your spinach and feta pies, making nice with ricotta in a layer of vegetarian lasagne and mucking in with bacon grease in makeshift collard greens.

There’s a sign on a new ish cafe that we discovered last weekend  in what might be one of my new favourite spots in Sydney. In confident capitals it says on the wall ‘Do more of what makes you happy’.

If you say so.

It’s an excellent reminder.  Sure there’s obligation, work, social niceties and recycling to sort. But after all of that? If you’re not doing what makes you happy- what the heck are you doing?

We had one shining week of The Hungry One being at home before the year kicked off with a vengeance. It was his first proper taste of paternity leave.

Even the best of intentions can end up busted. First- thank you to so many of you who wrote such lovely emails to me after last week’s sleep deprived brushes with the outer perimeter of sanity.  In this month of madness we’ve absently poured wine into our empty pasta bowl instead of glasses, become over sensitive about stubbed toes, lost sunglasses and keys like foreign change and occasionally wept for very little reason.  Like sadness, it seems exhaustion has a season and this too, shall pass.
